ALL PROCEEDS WILL GO TO THE SACRED STONE CAMP
Winter is coming and they will need all the help they can get to hold the line.
I wrote this 13 years ago, before I got my first loop pedal, and I've not done anything with it "officially." It seems this song may have known it had some kind of purpose. As I am unable to be at the camp, I am providing this song as my way of contributing to the efforts of the water protectors.
It was written when I was an anthropology student interested in ethnomusicology, traditional medicine and indigenous rights. Songs of healing and solidarity are often part of what keeps people resilient in troubling times and I hope this song can offer the same.
The lyrics were borrowed from a peyote ritual that was documented in an ethnomusicology book I once had. I intended to mix them in a sort of call and response and somehow through a happy accident that experiment turned out as you hear it. If you listen closely you can make out each word as they seem to circulate, mimicking the repetitive nature of the music.
Seeing the events unfold over the last few months is astounding. What happened on Sept 3rd and recently on Oct 27th had me fearful for our protectors. However, the bison herd coming over the hill on Oct 27th is a clear sign that the protectors are in the right. The timing and symbolism evoked in that moment is too powerful to ignore. Through their actions the protectors have reminded us that we can each do our part, in whatever form it takes, to stand in solidarity with Standing Rock and the Sacred Stone Camp.

Cempoalli Twenny recently posted on facebook, that the camp is a camp of healing. I offer this song as a song of healing for those on the front lines.
There are variations of these lyrics, and I am having trouble finding the specific book I got the words from. Roughly ,the lyrics are as follows.
Heyo wa ne he yana
heyo wa ne he ya na he
